Black, white and read all over

Reading is extremely important to your personal development, as well as to the development of your business.

Even if you only read a few pages every day, the act of reading—gaining new knowledge or escaping to a fictional reality—creates and establishes neural pathways in your brain. Just like any other muscle in your body, the brain needs exercise—and reading fulfills this exercise perfectly.

Having a dedicated “reading spot” is an excellent way to set up your reading habits. My husband recently renovated my home office, which now includes a reading area with a cozy chair and a customized magazine rack that holds my coffee cup. I begin my day in this chair, with a book related to my business such as business or entrepreneur bios, design trends or marketing strategy. I also have fitness books or magazines to read during commercials when I’m watching TV in the evening, and novels on my nightstand to read before I go to sleep.

Reading can also be a great stress reliever, especially if what you’re reading is very enjoyable. This is why the “candy books” (ie., books that are easy to read and engaging) should be read before bed—thus relaxing you, and encouraging a better sleep. There have been many studies on the benefits of reading, and it has been suggested that mental stimulation, such as reading, can slow the progress or even prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Another great benefit to reading is the knowledge that you gain—as well as a more expansive vocabulary. You will find yourself pulling out tidbits from books you read, and applying them to real life situations; or will use a word that your friends and family have never heard of, and realize that you had read it in a book.

Those who love to read explain it simply—there is a simple joy in being able to fall into a story; one where you can get lost for hours on end, and look up to find hours have passed. So whether you choose to read for pleasure, or for business, reading is a habit everyone should have.
