Press “pause”—for creativity’s sake

Ahh, the holidays. The time of the year when everyone scrambles to finish their shopping, plan for grand parties—a stressful few weeks or months, most definitely.

This is also the time of the year when many of us burn out creatively, as we’re so focused on the holidays, we don’t leave any time for ourselves.

Not only is that a very bad thing for your health (why do you think the cold and flu season is worse in the weeks leading up to the holidays?) it’s an incredible damper on your creative side. No one thinks clearly when they’re focused on what to get their spouse for Christmas, planning dinner for 12 family members and having to create a marketing plan that sparkles.

So here are a few tips on ensuring you get some R&R during the busy holiday season. You’ll be glad you did!

  1. Do something for yourself. When you’re out and about, shopping for the next best toy for your kids, or choosing something great for your spouse, find something small for yourself as well. Whether it be a book you’ve been wanting to read all year, or maybe a bottle of your favourite wine, pampering yourself during the holidays does wonders as a stress reliever.
  2. Spend time with your loved ones. Do something relaxing and quiet, or fun and exuberant—it’s all up to you. Make old-fashioned popcorn strings and hang them on tree; sit by the fire and drink hot chocolate with your spouse or children; whatever you find, make sure it’s something that’s relaxing and not stressful.
  3. Take a walk. When the world is at its most hectic, walking is one of the best ways to calm down. Bundle up, if necessary, and take a walk around your neighbourhood. Evening is the best, as you can enjoy all the lights and even the stars, if you’re lucky. Take a travel mug of hot cocoa or coffee with you to keep you warm.

Seasons’ greetings from Bateman Design Group! We wish all the best to you and yours, and look forward to working with you in the New Year.
