Stock Photography: An Easy and Effective Way to Get Quality Photos

Pictures can make or break a website or marketing campaign-the right photo will reflect the personality of your company, and intrigue your audience. But, professional photography can be costly and takes a long time to acquire … right?

That’s where stock photography comes in. Businesses of all shapes and sizes license stock photos for specific uses that have been predetermined to illustrate concepts, services, situations, etc. This makes it a lot easier for you to find the perfect photo for your project.

What is stock photography?

Stock photography is the supply of photographs that are licensed for specific uses. It is often used to fulfill the needs of creative assignments instead of hiring a photographer, often for a lower cost. Today, stock images can be found in searchable online databases which allow them to be quickly be purchased and delivered.

Why should we pay?

While it may be tempting to “borrow” a photo from Google Images or another website-that, quite simply, is stealing.

It’s certainly not worth the possible penalties if you get caught, not to mention the fact that you may be interfering with a professional photographer’s livelihood. Fines for illegally using photos can be between $100 and $5,000 per photo if you use it non-commercially, and $500 to $20,000 if it is used commercially.

The bottom line:

Purchasing photos legally, through popular sites such as istock and shutterstock, is quick, simple and generally inexpensive. Not only are you doing the right thing, you will almost always garner a better quality photo to use as well. These sites have a large catalogue of photos that can be purchased, and also in multiple file sizes – the higher the file size, the better the quality.

When planning your next creative project, consider using stock photography. We at Bateman Design Group have subscriptions to multiple stock photography sites which often allow us to include fully licensed stock photos in our designs with no additional cost to you.
